How does CloseUp! work?
CloseUp! scans your photo library on your device to detect faces, places, and dates. It then creates a guessing game where you identify zoomed-in or blurred photos from your own memories. All processing happens on your iPhone — your photos never leave your device.
Are my photos uploaded or shared?
No, never. CloseUp! processes everything on your device using Apple's built-in Vision and CoreML frameworks. Your photos stay in your photo library and are never uploaded, copied, or sent anywhere. Read our

Why does CloseUp! need access to my photos?
Photo access is required to create the game. CloseUp! reads your photos to detect faces, identify locations, and determine dates — then uses that information to generate personalized game rounds. Without photo access, the app cannot function.
How long does the initial scan take?
The initial lightning scan takes about 30–60 seconds and gets you playing immediately. A deeper background scan continues afterward to find more photos and improve face groupings. The total time depends on your library size.
Why aren't all my people showing up?
A person needs at least 5 photos to appear in the game. The app may also still be scanning — check Settings to see your scan progress. You can also trigger a rescan from Settings to pick up new photos.
What's included in the free version?
Free users can play up to 2 games per day (3 if you create an account) with 5 rounds each, using face-based categories and 1 hint per game. Premium unlocks all categories (places, dates, and more), up to 20 rounds per game, 2 hints, and unlimited daily games.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Go to your iPhone's Settings > tap your name > Subscriptions > CloseUp > Cancel Subscription. Your premium access continues until the end of the current billing period. You can also request a refund through Apple at
reportaproblem.apple.com.
Can I delete my data?
Yes. In the app, go to Settings > "Clear & Rescan All Photos" to reset all scanned data. Alternatively, deleting the app removes all locally stored data. For account deletion, email

Does CloseUp! work on iPad?
CloseUp! is currently designed for iPhone. iPad support may be added in a future update.
What iOS version do I need?
CloseUp! requires iOS 17.0 or later.
Troubleshooting
App is running slowly or crashing
Try closing other apps and restarting CloseUp. If the issue persists, go to Settings > "Clear & Rescan All Photos" to rebuild your game data. Make sure your device has at least 500MB of free storage.
Photos aren't being detected
Make sure CloseUp has full photo library access: Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos > CloseUp > Full Access. iCloud-only photos may take longer to scan as they need to download first.
Face groupings are wrong
Face detection uses on-device AI which improves over time. You can manually review and fix face groupings in Settings > "Meet Your People." Tap on any person to review their photos and remove incorrect matches.
Subscription not working
Try restoring your purchase in Settings > "Restore Purchases." If that doesn't work, make sure you're signed into the same Apple ID you used for the purchase. Contact hello@playcloseup.com if the issue continues.
Notifications not appearing
Check that notifications are enabled: iPhone Settings > CloseUp > Notifications > Allow Notifications. In the app, go to Settings and make sure your preferred notification types are turned on.
